Accidental Retail Compositions

celebration of the mundane

A series of still life paintings based on the coat hanger stand at my retail job and the chance configurations the hangers found themselves in when thrown on their stand after sales. Working a retail job in a tourist town where the Winter months meant going hours without someone walking through the door resulted in the excitement of occasionally being rewarded with the hangers being in a ludicrous position becoming a highlight of the job.

The works are oil paint on found glass - I wanted to use a used/sustainable matrix in an attempt to allay the fact that the subject is a small but essential part of the fast fashion industry. It is also a nod to the glass and mirrors that everyone in a retail job has had to clean at some point as a rite of passage.

Exhibited at RED Gallery in Fitzroy North in March 2024
